How many interviews do you end not knowing if everything you have heard is accurate? When an applicant says they know State DOT standards, is it that they know the standard specifications exist or that they know NJDOT storm pipe is found in section 601 and structures are in 602?
Do they know that MDDOT pays for trenching separately from the storm drain or that DelDOT now includes trenching in the pipe when a few years ago they paid separately for that? And that can change with every job dependent upon the supplemental spec?
Do they know that NJDOT has a stepping detail for non-confined pavement and that the intermediate, base, and DGA courses will be larger than the surface course of pavement?
We have interviewed many a potential estimator, project manager, takeoff technician, and other positions to ascertain their level of understanding of the work. We have also been able to accurately describe their level of knowledge of estimating, excel usage, construction requirements of working for specific public agencies and more.
You can avoid hiring someone that says they know everything yet understands nothing. Or you can hire them for the position they would be suitable for as opposed to the job for which they applied.

Many an estimator has been interviewed and responded to the question “What do you know about HeavyBid” and their response is “I’ve used it for 10 years”. Yet when asked how much of the fringe goes to PTO, they have no idea where to find that information.
Some estimators have never set up a system and so have no knowledge of the details contained therein. This is potentially very dangerous.
